Underground Storage Tank Division
The Underground Storage Tank Program functions solely for UST and UST-related tasks. The goal of the UST Program is to protect human health and the environment by preventing releases of petroleum and hazardous substances from UST systems. The release of these regulated products into the environment threatens soil and groundwater resources and can cause explosive vapors to seep into confined spaces and occupied residences.
To help prevent contamination caused by leaking tanks, tank owners and operators must comply with state rules for UST’s. The objectives of the UST Program are to ensure that:
- UST systems are properly constructed and designed.
- Installations, repairs, and removals are conducted and inspected by qualified individuals
- Active USTs are properly operated and monitored for releases
- USTs are properly closed and/or removed and the sites properly assessed for contamination.

What We Do
There are just under 10,000 underground storage tanks statewide storing petroleum base and/or hazardous substances. LDEQ work with tank owners/operators to protect the environment and human health from the potential releases from these underground storage systems. These systems are regulated under Louisiana Administrative Code (LAC) Title 33 Part XI.
The Underground Storage Tank Division regulates USTs using a number of programs listed below.
Registrations and Fees
All UST facilities must register their tanks with the Department by completing a official UST Registration form as per the regulations. There are annual fees associated with operating an Underground Storage Tank.
UST Certified Workers
Persons performing critical junctures for underground storage tank installations, repairs, and closures require certifications.
UST Compliance
UST Compliance is aimed at reducing the number of underground storage tank releases to the environment by focusing on preventing releases. The UST Division accomplishes this by scheduled routine inspections at UST facilities.
UST Grants
Effective January 1, 2024 the UST Division began accepting applications to assist private persons or entities in financing the costs necessary for upgrading and/or improving single wall underground storage tank systems.
UST Remediation
The Underground Storage Tank (UST) Division has a staff of geologists and scientists responsible for managing and overseeing clean up efforts at locations that have or have had leaking UST systems.
