Nuclear Power Plant Drills and Preparedness

As part of its planning and assessment responsibilities, LDEQ participates in regular drills and exercises designed to ensure readiness in the event of an incident at a nuclear power plant. These drills are conducted in coordination with federal, state, and local partners and are essential for maintaining a strong emergency response framework. They allow staff to practice communication, environmental monitoring, field operations, and decision‑making procedures under realistic conditions. The goal is to ensure that Louisiana is fully prepared to protect public health and the environment should a nuclear event occur. These exercises also help maintain compliance with federal requirements and strengthen coordination among agencies.

Drill Participation and Coordination

Louisiana has two nuclear power plants within the state—Waterford 3 and River Bend Station—and LDEQ participates in scheduled drills for both facilities. In addition, Louisiana shares oversight responsibilities for the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station with the State of Mississippi, and LDEQ takes part in joint drills to ensure seamless coordination across state lines. Prior to each exercise, staff complete extensive preparation, including reviewing emergency plans, updating procedures, and coordinating with partner agencies. During the drills, LDEQ teams simulate field monitoring, environmental sampling, and emergency communications to test readiness and identify areas for improvement. These activities ensure that the state remains well‑prepared and aligned with federal expectations for nuclear emergency preparedness.
