Registration for the Louisiana Envirothon environmental competition to be held, March 9 at the LSU Ag Center Burden Center in Baton Rouge, is now open.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is encouraging the public to submit nominations for the Gulf Guardian Awards Program. As a member of the Gulf of Mexico Program and Gulf of Mexico Alliance, Louisiana residents can nominate citizens, companies and organizations that are taking positive steps to keep the Gulf of Mexico and associated coastal water habitats healthy, beautiful and productive. The deadline for submitting nominations is March 8, 2013.

Dwight Bradshaw, DEQ Senior Environmental Scientist, gives a presentation to an Environmental Science class from Baton Rouge Community College on DEQ's emergency response efforts during Hurricane Katrina. Bradshaw also outlined the prerequisites for becoming a DEQ environmental scientist, along with the career's associated duties and responsibilities.

Gov. Bobby Jindal has declared May as Air Quality Awareness Month in Louisiana. May is traditionally the start of ozone season and the proclamation was made to encourage citizens to become familiar with the Air Quality Index, to understand what causes ozone formation and to take voluntary steps to help prevent the formation and improve air quality.

Peggy Hatch, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, and Senator Mike Walsworth, chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, presented an EPA grant to the University of Louisiana at Monroe today in Monroe. Dr. Nick J. Bruno, president of ULM, and Dr. Kevin Baer, principal investigator and toxicology department chair, accepted the grant.
