DEQ issues Administrative Order to cease certain Shreveport landfill operations

Today, the Department of Environmental Quality issued an administrative order requiring a Shreveport landfill owned by Harrelson Material Management, Inc. to cease receiving and disposing of new material, which is believed to be causing fire and smoke issues at the landfill site. DEQ issued the order out of an abundance of caution and is currently testing environmental conditions at the site and monitoring the air in the area.

The workshop is co-hosted by the city of Shreveport, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the Technical Assistance to Brownfields Program at Kansas State University.

Governor proclaims May as Air Quality Awareness Month

Gov. Bobby Jindal has declared May as Air Quality Awareness Month in Louisiana. May is traditionally the start of ozone season and the proclamation was made to encourage citizens to become familiar with the Air Quality Index, to understand what causes ozone formation and to take voluntary steps to help prevent ozone formation and improve air quality.

Seven arrested for knowingly submitting false records to DEQ

Today, the Louisiana Environmental Crimes Task Force completed the arrests of seven individuals for knowingly filing or maintaining false public records with DEQ in connection with the vehicle emissions program. Investigators within the Criminal Investigation Division of DEQ, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Public Safety conducted the multi-agency investigation.

DEQ to host free training sessions on air permitting

DEQ will host four free training sessions across the state on Air Permitting 201: Understanding the Details. These sessions will provide more in depth information on air permitting in Louisiana. Participants will learn how the air regulations apply to the development of a permit. Specific examples will be discussed and will cover samples of each typical document included in the permits.

DEQ to host free Enviroschool class on MS4 permits

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is sponsoring a free Enviroschool class on "Understanding MS4 Permits: Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems" in six cities around the state. The training session will help municipalities and contractors understand the MS4 permits and will provide practical applications to clarify permitting issues. All classes will be held from 10 a.m. until noon.

ExxonMobil agrees to $2,329,000 settlement

ExxonMobil will pay $2,329,000 to fund beneficial environmental projects (BEPs) and a spill countermeasures program and to pay civil penalties to DEQ under a settlement agreement finalized Jan. 9.
