Baton Rouge - An Environmental Crime Investigation Techniques course will be held on August 4 through 7 at the Belle of Baton Rouge Hotel, 103 France St., Baton Rouge, LA 70802. Registration is from 1 to 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 4, with class concluding at noon on Aug. 7. The course is hosted by the Southern Environmental Enforcement Network and the Criminal Investigation Division of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
Registration is free to local, state and law enforcement personnel from Louisiana, and the course is geared toward law enforcement personnel who may encounter evidence of environmental felony and misdemeanor level criminal activity. There are a limited number of seats available for this course and they are being allocated on a first come, first served basis.
The course will cover the specialized methods and techniques unique to environmental crime investigations. Topics will include the criminal provisions of the environmental statutes, environmental search warrant preparation and execution, personal protection and safety, environmental sampling and chemistry, preparing and presenting your case to the prosecutor. The course emphasizes a multi-disciplined, teamwork approach which relies on the involvement of regulatory personnel, law enforcement officers and prosecutors. The course also includes a practical exercise during which students will work in teams to address many of the common issues associated with environmental crime investigations and prosecutions.
The course qualifies as a pre-requisite to the Advanced Environmental Crime Training Program (AECTP) presented at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia. The AECTP is regarded as the premiere advanced training course for environmental enforcement professionals throughout the U.S. and Canada.
