DEQ, partners celebrate air quality milestone

Today, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and its partners celebrated the redesignation of the five parish area around Baton Rouge from nonattainment to attainment for the air pollutant ozone. EPA's redesignation means it is changing Baton Rouge's status from out of attainment to attainment.

Rapides Parish man pleads guilty to illegal disposal of wastes

Yesterday, a Rapides parish contractor admitted in 9th Judicial District Court to illegally disposing of wastes. Walter Monroe Smith, Sr., 62, of Pineville and owner of Rapides Roofing and Home Repair, pled guilty to two separate felony counts of illegally disposing of wastes that endangered or could have endangered human life or health.

Over the past year, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality has required payment of more than $2,780,000 in penalties and funding for Beneficial Environmental Projects throughout the state.
