DEQ to host free Enviroschool class on MS4 permits

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is sponsoring a free Enviroschool class on "Understanding MS4 Permits: Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems" in six cities around the state. The training session will help municipalities and contractors understand the MS4 permits and will provide practical applications to clarify permitting issues. All classes will be held from 10 a.m. until noon.

ExxonMobil agrees to $2,329,000 settlement

ExxonMobil will pay $2,329,000 to fund beneficial environmental projects (BEPs) and a spill countermeasures program and to pay civil penalties to DEQ under a settlement agreement finalized Jan. 9.

Interagency team accepting comments on draft Louisiana Nutrient Management Strategy

A review copy of the draft Louisiana Nutrient Management Strategy is now available and the state is accepting public comment on it until Jan. 31, 2014. Louisiana Nutrient Management Strategy: Protection, Improvement, and Restoration of Water Quality in Louisiana's Water Bodies focuses on factors such as nitrogen and phosphorus that may impact local water bodies as well as contribute to seasonal low dissolved oxygen in the Gulf of Mexico.

Acronym Directory available on DEQ website

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality has compiled a list of commonly used environmental acronyms and it is now available on the DEQ website. Understanding the technical terms and abbreviations connected with environmental regulation and protection can be difficult. The Acronym Directory is an alphabetical list of acronyms commonly used by DEQ and other state agencies as it relates to matters concerning environmental protection and DEQ-related operations. This directory should make it easier to decipher documents and technical writing

Hands-on training offered by DEQ for NetDMR online reporting

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is offering training for permit holders on the use of the NetDMR online application for the submission of discharge monitoring reports. A Discharge Monitoring Report, known as a DMR, is a self-reporting document that is generated by those who hold a Louisiana Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. The DMR contains information pertaining to water discharges into waters of the state.

Iberville Parish man pleads guilty to illegal dumping of pollutants

An Iberville Parish man was sentenced Wednesday, Nov. 13, in the 18th Judicial District Court for violating Louisiana's Water Control Law and the Environmental Quality Act for the second time in three years. Tommy M. Francise, 58, of Plaquemine, illegally dumped wastes, and grease into a drainage canal behind his residence on Talbot Drive in Plaquemine.
