Household Hazardous Materials Day 2000 On August 5. 2000 the Vermilion Parish Department of Public works in conjunction with Philips Services held their annual Household hazardous Material collection Day. This event collected over 16 tons of material, much sent for recycling and incineration while being diverted from the Parish landfill. Sponsors and participants of this event included Vermilion Parish Department of public works, Philip Reclamation Services, International Oil, Interstate Battery, Abbeville Fire Department, Parish Land fill operators, and Colt Inc. The response to this event was parish wide. Some statistics of material collected: 173 vehicles were unloaded       101 batteries   661 Small vehicle tires   40 Tractor tires    1800 Gallons of used motor oil   4045 lbs. Of latex paint       800 lbs. of pesticides/Herbicides Many tons of household hazardous material were diverted from the parish landfill.
