| This successful event was held at two locations on Saturday October 28, 2000. It was provided as a community service by thirteen manufacturers in the St. Charles and St. John the Baptist Parishes.
This is the third year for HHMCD in these two Parishes, and the first that collected scrap metal. A comparison of the two events is provided in tabulations below. The purpose of the event was to provide households an opportunity to properly dispose or recycle materials that are inappropriate for curbside pickup. Materials such as solvents, poisons, used oil and corrosives require special handling to prevent safety and environmental impact.
Patrons of these events drove their vehicles to the collection centers where they were greeted and their cars were unloaded by volunteers. Approximately 170 cars visited the St. Charles location in Destrehan and another 107 vehicles visited the St. John location in LaPlace.
To the right is a picture of workers emptying paint cans to prepare the oil-based paint for energy recovery and enable the empty can to be recycled as scrap metal.
What Were the Results?
At the end of the day, tons of potentially harmful materials had been prepared for recycling, recovery, treatment or disposal. The table below gives the totals for HHMCD in its 3-year history. The numbers are for St. Charles plus St. John collections.
