St. Mary Drinking Water Protection Program schedules second committee meeting

Jan 16, 2015

Baton Rouge - The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality Drinking Water Protection Program Team has been working with citizens in St. Mary Parish to protect their drinking water. A committee has been formed and the program has scheduled a second meeting.

The next meeting of the St. Mary Parish Drinking Water Protection Committee is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Bayou Vista Community Center, 1333 Belleview Street, Morgan City. There will be a presentation about potential sources of contamination around local water sources. The committee is made up of water operators, local officials and citizens interested in protecting their water. There is room on the committee for more members and the meeting is open to the public. Everyone interested in learning about their water and how to protect it is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The Drinking Water Protection Program is a voluntary program designed to assist communities in protecting their drinking water sources. The campaign seeks to involve private citizens, community groups, water systems, local government officials, businesses and industry in the protection of the parish’s waters.

DEQ is seeking more volunteers to serve on committees to work with the community in creating a sustainable drinking water protection program. For more information, contact the Drinking Water Protection Team at 225-219-3510 or visit the DEQ Web page at http://www.deq.louisiana.gov/AEPs.
