DEQ delivers 2015 Hurricane Resource Manual to all 64 parishes

This week, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality began distributing an updated 2015 Hurricane Resource Manual to all 64 parishes. The manual contains information pertaining to hurricane/emergency recovery assistance as it relates to permitting, debris collection and environmental cleanup resources.

DEQ, LDAF sign agreement to define BMP process

Staff members at the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) collaborated and came up with a way to mainstream both agencies' paperwork and regulatory workloads, recycle some valuable assets, stimulate more agricultural production and at the same time, help keep the environment clean and safe for human health.

NOLA OIL TERMINAL PUBLIC HEARING HAS BEEN CANCELED

The 6 p.m. public hearing for the Nola Oil Terminal Louisiana Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (LPDES) permit application scheduled for tonight, April 14, has been canceled due to inclement weather. The hearing was to have been held at the Belle Chasse Auditorium in Belle Chasse. The LDEQ Office of Environmental Services will reschedule this public hearing at a future date.

DEQ awards contract to compact, close Harrelson Landfill

DEQ Secretary Peggy Hatch announced today that DEQ has awarded a contract to close the Harrelson Landfill on Russell Road in Shreveport to Murphy Brothers Trucking and Construction, LLC of Acadia, La. The landfill will be closed by placing a two foot thick layer of clay and six-inch layer of topsoil over the entire disposal area. The disposal area will then be seeded and fertilized to return the site to a more natural appearance. Following closure, the final cover will be monitored for erosion and other potential problems for a minimum of three years.

2015 Envirothon environmental competition held at LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens

The 2015 Louisiana Envirothon Environmental Competition was held March 14 at the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens in Baton Rouge. Five teams from grades 9 through 12 participated in an environmental problem solving competition that consisted of testing in aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, the current issue on Urban and Community Forestry and an oral presentation.
